DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION
What's in a Name?
Your domain name is your Internet calling card. It is your company's unique identity on the Internet. Registering a unique domain name for your business, allows you to use shorter, more easy-to-remember addresses.
For example, rather than using your "actual" addresses:
www.yourinternetserviceprovider.com/yourname (web address)
yourname@yourinternetserviceprovider.com (e-mail address)
A domain name allows you to use "virtual" addresses:
www.yourdomain.com (web address)
yourname@yourdomain.com (e-mail address)
As long as you continue to pay the annual fee to retain your domain name, you will never need to change your web site and e-mail addresses - even if you change Internet Service Providers down the road.
The above examples use the .COM "top level domain" since it is by far the most popular "top level domain", however there are many "top level domains" that you can use:
| .CA | Indicates the web site is Canadian. |
| .ORG | Typically used for non-profit organizations. |
| .NET | Originally designated for web sites that represent part of the Internet's infrastructure. |
| .WS | |
| .TV | |
| .CC | |
